Changes in the Ownership of Houses in Beijing
As can be clearly seen from the above graph, great changes have taken place in the ownership of houses in Beijing during the past decade. In 1990, 75% houses in Beijing were state - owned, with only a quarter left for individuals. From then on, the number of private houses has increased much but still less than state - owned ones. While by the year of 2000, private houses increased sharply from 40 % in 1995 to 80 % in 2000, when the state – owned houses only accounted for 20 %.
It goes without saying that some driving factors that contribute to the above changes may be summarized as fallows. To begin with, with the rapid development of market-oriented economy, the Beijing government abandoned the traditional housing system which did not accommodate to the new situations. Houses were no longer distributed according to people' s ages or official status. People were encouraged to buy their own houses. What’s more, owing to owing to the rapid improvement of Beijing’s living standard, an increasing number of people can afford to buy their own apartment.
Based on what has been discussed above, we may reasonably make the comment that the
Changes in the Ownership of Houses in Beijing not only foster the economic development and city construction of Beijing but also enable the people of Beijing enjoy larger and more comfortable living space. (229)

Directions: In this section, you are required to study the following table carefully and write an essay more than 150 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
Outline:
1. State the changes briefly
2. Give possible reasons for the changes
3. Remark your viewpoint
items
years students determined to further study students willing to work after graduation
2000 40% 60%
2002 60% 40%
2004 70% 30%
The figures shown in the table tell us clearly both the percentage of university students who determined to further study and the percentage of students willing to work after graduation. As we can see, the figures of those who decide to participate in the Postgraduate Entrance Examination keep on increasing by 40% ,60% and 70% in 2000,2002 and 2004 respectively. In comparison with the above case, the figures of students who are willing to work after graduation decline in big steps year by year. It is not difficult to find that an increasing number of college students tend to study further rather than to find jobs after graduation.
Some driving factors that contribute to the above tendency can be summarized as follows. First of all, further study will enable graduates to meet future challenge resulting from the rapid development in society; In addition, with tens of thousands of graduates rushing into the job market, competition becomes more heating and cruel than ever. In that situation, the higher degree one has, the more easily he will be to find jobs.
There is no deny that I would study in the present time when it is difficult to move without professional knowledge. It is urgent that we should promote both our knowledge and skills. Therefore, we can work better and not be eliminated by society . ( 224 )
Title: The Increase in the Number of Chinese Traveling Abroad
Outline: 1) State the changes in the number of Chinese traveling abroad in the past three years.
2) Give possible reasons for the changes
Requirement: Study the following chart carefully and base your composition on the information given in the chart. 全国出境旅游人数 (企业:百万)
(人数)14 12 10 8 64
(年份) 1999年 2000年 2001年
The Increase in the Number of Chinese Traveling Abroad
What is shown in the chart above indicates clearly that dramatic changes have taken place in the number of Chinese traveling abroad in the past fifteen years. According to the figures given in the bar, we can see the number of Chinese traveling abroad was on a steady rise all the times. In 1995, the number of Chinese traveling abroad was about 2.5million, but within no more than ten years, the number of Chinese traveling abroad reached to 8 million
Some driving factors that contribute to the above-mentioned changes may be summarized as fallows. First of all, with the rapid development of Chinese economy and society, the Chinese people are getting better off and can afford to travel abroad. What's more, such huge changes have a lot to do with the development of the travel industry in China. More and more travel agencies are attracting more people to join in their tours abroad. Furthermore, the changes are closely related to our policy of opening up to the outside world.
Taking all these factors into consideration, we may reasonably predict that with the rapid and further development of our society, there will be an increasing Chinese people who are going to go abroad for traveling. All this not only reflects not only the improvement of our living standards but also mirrors the development of our economy. ( 219 words )

H. The Goal of Life
After reading the above story of a British young man, I think he is both admirable and pitiful. For one thing, he successfully climbed all the famous mountains as his parents had wished. As we all know, it needs much perseverance and courage to achieve such a goal especially for a person who even has difficulty in walking. For another, however, as a 28-year-old great man, he committed suicide just because he had no more goals in his life. From the story, I learned the importance of goals in one' s life.
As to myself, at present I am working on my post-graduate courses to get a diploma though the goal seems not so difficult as the young man' s, it also demands strong will and hard work. And I will try my best to fulfill the tough job as the young man did in climbing mountains. When I succeed. a new goal will be set accordingly because there is always a greater goal ahead. I think that life is limited, but what we should do in this world will never reach an end. So we must keep a positive attitude toward our lives.
Considering all these, I believe that the goal of life is essential to one's success and we should accomplish our goals one after another during the whole life.

A Letter of Complaint
Date: 14 January 2006
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the laptop computer I bought in your shop on May Day.
The case goes like this, I bought NEC laptop computer at your Zhongguancun branch on the first day of May. However, within a few Months, I began to experience problems with it. The main problems were that a few of the programs installed on it ceased to function and that the laptop refused to accept any discs, even though they can be accepted by both my desktop computer and my friend's Toshiba 2000.
When I returned to the shop to claim a replacement or a refund under the terms of the warranty provided by your shop, I was informed that I am not entitled to as the warranty card is invalid. I asked, “ why don’t you explain it to me early”. Your clerk replied that it’s my business. When I asked them to have a repair, they said it must be used in a wrong way, which means it is a man-made problem and I must pay for it. All this made me depressed. Even worse it already influenced my daily work.
As a result, I am writing to you in order to sort the situation out. 1 believe the warranty card to be complete and valid. I enclose a photocopy for you to check. I would like to arrange for my faulty laptop to be exchanged or for my money to be refunded. Please contact me when you have looked into the matter. I may be contacted by telephone on (010-55667788) (221 words)
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours faithfully
